What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover utilizes one or more cosmetic surgeries to restore or enhance your body after childbirth. Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding can all lead to permanent physical changes in a woman’s body. If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, have loose skin and excess fat on your stomach, or are simply looking to redefine your body’s contour, a mommy makeover may be the solution for you. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann will develop a surgical plan unique to your needs and will help you achieve your vision for your body. Dr. Dreckmann is a board-certified, highly talented plastic surgeon with years of expertise performing mommy makeovers in the Greater Toronto Area. As a mother herself, she is able to relate to her patients’ body changes after pregnancy and better understand their surgical goals.

 Mommy Makeover Focus Areas

Breast

Pregnancy can lead to a loss of breast volume with or without breastfeeding. As the breasts enlarge during pregnancy, they expand the breast tissue and when the breasts subsequently shrink after pregnancy, the skin may remain expanded, causing the breasts to sag. A breast lift can restore the breasts' shape to a more youthful appearance, and a breast augmentation can restore or increase breast volume. In some cases where the breasts have remained uncomfortably large after pregnancy, women will opt for a breast reduction to reduce volume and lift and reshape the breast.

Abdomen

During pregnancy the skin on the abdomen can become permanently stretched, resulting in loose skin and stretch marks after child birth. Additionally, the abdominal muscles can become stretched causing a protruding or bulging stomach that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. A tummy tuck is used to tighten abdominal muscles, remove loose skin and fat, remove stretch marks below the belly button and flatten the stomach. Women may also notice specific areas of fat develop during pregnancy which can be targeted by liposuction to permanently remove fat.

Body

Excess fat can develop during pregnancy in the following areas:

  • Thighs

  • Arms

  • Hips and flanks

  • Neck

  • Back

Aging and physical changes can also cause these areas to sag or have more flabby skin. We offer a variety of body lifts and liposuction procedures, which can be incorporated into a “mommy makeover” to remove excess skin and fat in these areas.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation refers to a multitude of surgeries that can be performed to improve the shape, size, function or aesthetics of the vagina and surrounding areas. It can refer to clitoral hood reduction, labiaplasty, labia majoraplasty, hymenoplasty, monsplasty, vaginoplasty, or perineoplasty.

During pregnancy and childbirth, the labia minora may become elongated. If you’re suffering from physical discomfort during physical activity or are self-conscious about your labia’s appearance, a labiaplasty can help with that.

  • Many women tend to gain some excess weight during their pregnancy, but it is important to try and come as close as possible to your ideal weight before having a mommy makeover. A number of mommy makeover procedures (specifically lifts) involve the removal of excess skin, and weight fluctuations after surgery can reverse the results of a lift if the skin is stretched back out.

  • It is a good idea to wait at least 6 months after you give birth, or if breastfeeding, 6 months after you stop. This ensures your body has had enough time to recover. You’ll additionally want to ensure your weight is stable. If you are no longer able to improve your body contour through diet and exercise, it may be time to consider a mommy makeover as an option.

  • It really depends on multiple factors, including patient anatomy, the desired surgical procedure(s), and the length of time they’re expected to take.

To ensure patient safety, typically no more than 1-2 surgeries are performed at once, but it depends on the extent of a given procedure. At your consultation, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann will be able to outline an initial surgical schedule for you, based on the surgeries you desire.

  • First, ask yourself if you plan on any future pregnancies. If the answer is yes, you may want to avoid a mommy makeover until after your last planned childbirth. Next, you should ensure that you are near and maintaining your ideal weight so that your results won’t be impacted by weight fluctuations. It is recommended that surgical candidates be non-smokers or quit smoking for at least 4 weeks prior to surgery, as well as after. Your doctor may also ask you to get lab testing done, or add, remove or adjust some of your medications to prepare for surgery.
