What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, are injected under the skin as a non-surgical cosmetic procedure to plump up lips, restore facial volume and smooth out lines and wrinkles in the face. They are a key component of the “non-surgical facelift”. Juvéderm and Restylane are brands of hyaluronic acid fillers which offer immediate results and typically last for 6 to 24 months. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the skin that’s involved in tissue regeneration and repair. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute in Richmond Hill, we can help you achieve your aesthetic goals with a wide variety of fillers including lip injections, chin fillers, cheek fillers and more.

Areas for Filler Injections - Face & Body

Beautiful woman's face with dermal filler areas labeled

Cheek Filler

Cheek fillers are injected into the cheekbone area to either add definition to bone structure, restore lost volume or smooth out wrinkles. Fillers in the cheek area help to provide a natural, youthful contour and can often improve the appearance of the whole face. If you have never had fillers before, this is often a good location to start receiving injections.

Lip Fillers

Lip fillers can be used to create fuller looking lips, restore lip volume, smooth out wrinkles, and correct asymmetry. The lips can also have fillers injected to provide a more defined “cupid’s bow” shape or even a more pouty appearance.

Jawline Filler

Jawline fillers can be used to increase definition between the neck and jawline as well as give the jawline a sharper angle. Jawline fillers can also be used to smooth out creases and lines in the jaw and reduce sagging skin by adding volume.

Chin Filler

Chin fillers can balance the facial contour and produce a more aesthetic profile by providing a stronger or more defined chin and jawline. They can also be used to reduce a chin cleft.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty Nose Filler

A non-surgical rhinoplasty or “liquid rhinoplasty” involves using fillers to reshape the nose to hide minor bumps, lift the tip of the nose, or correct asymmetries in the nose.

Marionette Lines

The marionette lines are the creases which extend from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin. Targeted dermal filler injections around this area can help smooth out mild to moderate marionette lines.

Nasolabial Fold Filler

Nasolabial folds are the lines which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, which deepen as we age. Dermal fillers can be applied to these folds to quickly soften the visibility of the lines. Nasolabial fold fillers are often paired with cheek fillers as nasolabial folds can also be a symptom of volume loss in the cheeks.

Ear Lobes

Over time, earlobes may lose volume or develop wrinkles due to aging or heavy earring use. Fillers can be used to rejuvenate and plump up the earlobes, reducing the appearance of sagging or wrinkles.

Temple Region

Dermal fillers can be used to add volume and restore youthful contours to the temples, which may hollow out or become sunken due to aging or weight loss.

Tear Trough

Fillers can be used to smooth out under-eye hollows, improve dark circles, remove wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance to the under-eye area. This can help patients appear less tired and more refreshed.

Neck and Décolletage

Fillers can be used to address signs of aging, such as sagging skin and wrinkles, on the neck and décolletage area (upper chest). They can provide a smoother and more youthful appearance to these areas.

Hands

Dermal fillers can be used to restore volume and improve the appearance of aging hands. They can help minimize the visibility of tendons, veins and wrinkles, giving a more youthful look to the hands.

Non-surgical Butt Lift / Buttocks

(Coming Soon) Dermal fillers can be used to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks, creating a fuller and more lifted appearance.

G-Shot

The G-shot is a procedure intended to enhance sexual pleasure in women by injecting a small amount of dermal filler into the front wall of the vagina near the G-spot. The goal is to increase sensitivity and potentially improve orgasms.

Filler Injection FAQs

  • At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we use several different filler products which target different areas of the face and last different amounts of time. Typically, hyaluronic acid fillers can last from 6-24 months, depending on which product is used.

  • Typically for the initial consultation and first injection it takes between 20-30 minutes. Subsequent injections can be performed usually in about 15 minutes or less.

  • The dermal fillers we use at Valespring are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring, soft, gel-like substance in the body which binds to water to revitalize and add volume to the skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be strategically injected into the skin to add volume to smooth out wrinkles and reshape and refine facial features.

  • Most people experience only minor discomfort since a very tiny needle is used to inject the dermal fillers. No anesthesia or pain killers are needed. Some of the filler products we use include lidocaine which acts as a local anesthetic for patient comfort during and after the procedure.

  • There will be an immediate visible result after the filler injection and it usually takes up to 2 weeks for most of the filler to settle.

  • The specific instructions you should follow after a dermal filler injection will be discussed at the time of your procedure. However, general guidelines include:

    • Refrain from applying makeup or creams for a few hours after the treatment

    • Cold compresses can be used to reduce swelling and soreness

    • Avoid exposure to the sun / UV lamps for the first 24 hours

    • Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours after the injection

    • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for 6 hours after treatment

    • Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) for 4 weeks after the injection

  • Lip fillers are temporary and typically last between 12 to 18 months.

  • Fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It works by breaking the bonds holding the hyaluronic acid molecules together, which allows the body to reabsorb the compounds and may reverse the effects of the filler.

  • Most patients are candidates for filler injection. Fillers are injected routinely to adults of any age.

Medical contraindications to filler injection are rare, and include things like allergic reactions to the filler components or active infection around the proposed injection sites.
