Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
What is a BBL?
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a cosmetic surgery that uses liposuction to remove fat from undesirable areas, and then transfers that fat to the buttocks to enhance its size and shape. The liposuction in a BBL procedure usually targets specific areas around the hips, waist, belly, and back to contour the body in a way that accentuates a natural-looking hourglass figure. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann will develop a surgical plan unique to your needs and will help you achieve your vision for your body. Dr. Dreckmann is a board-certified, highly talented plastic surgeon who specializes in liposuction with years of experience performing Brazilian Butt Lifts in the Greater Toronto Area.

Smokers should quit smoking at least 4 weeks prior to surgery as well as after

A BBL Surgery Overview
Procedure
Liposuction is performed on the targeted areas, harvesting the fat for transfer
After processing the fat, it is injected into the buttocks and hips.
The entire procedure usually takes 3-4 hours.
Anesthesia
General Anesthesia so that the patient is fully asleep for the procedure.
Recovery
Approximately 2 weeks off of work
After surgery, pressure must be kept off the buttocks area. Patients have to avoid sitting or lying down on the buttocks for a number of weeks and will be given a special pillow to use when sitting for short periods
A compression garment must be worn for at least 6 weeks to optimize your BBL results
The final results will become apparent around 6-12 months after surgery
These numbers serve as a rough guideline, but you should always follow your surgical team’s specific and individualized recovery plan, as recommendations may vary from patient to patient
Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery - Step by Step
Compression Garments and Massage
After the procedure you will be given a complimentary compression garment. It is important to wear the garment as instructed for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. It will reduce swelling, bleeding, bruising, pain and discomfort, and most importantly it will help you achieve the optimal body contour after your surgery. Some patients choose to have lymphatic massage performed after their surgery to accelerate and assist with recovery.
Liposuction Areas for a BBL
Typical BBL liposuction areas include:
Flanks
Lower Back
Abdomen
Thighs
Alternate areas may be used in thinner patients if additional fat is required for fat transfer, or if the patient simply wants additional body contouring.

FAQs about Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL)
-
Many BBL patients maintain great results for a long period, even after 10 years, provided the patient doesn’t gain or lose a large amount of weight and follows a proper diet. A BBL does not account for skin loosening over time, which is often age-related. A touch-up BBL may sometimes be recommended in specific cases to help maintain the shape.
-
Valespring provides a complimentary “booty pillow” with your surgery which is designed to help you sit using your thighs and to prevent your buttocks from pressure. This will help retain the most amount of fat, as well as help to maintain a natural and aesthetic shape.
-
A “skinny BBL” or “mini BBL” is a smaller fat transfer to the buttocks for a slight increase in volume as well as improved contour, while also removing areas of unwanted fat to give a more refined silhouette. Skinny BBLs are typically for patients with a lower body mass index (BMI).
-
After BBL surgery, about 50-70% of the original amount of fat transferred will remain. The amount of fat that “takes” or remains long-term is variable from patient to patient. Your plastic surgeon will have compensated for this during the procedure. Most of the fat loss occurs within the first few weeks after surgery, but it typically takes 6-12 months to appreciate the final result. After this time period, the remaining transplanted fat cells should be permanent.
-
Yes. Research has shown that BBLs have a similar safety profile when compared to other cosmetic surgeries, such as a tummy tuck. Complications related to BBLs have decreased significantly over the last several years, due to an improved understanding of how to perform the procedure more safely. The procedure will be performed by our qualified and experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann, in our on-site, accredited surgical facility. Patient safety is of utmost importance to us.
-
There is typically extremely minimal skin scarring during a BBL surgery. There may be one or more scars at the fat injection or liposuction sites, but these tend to be exceptionally small and usually fade completely. Extra precaution is taken to make incisions in areas that are easily concealed or hidden within the natural lines of the body, whenever possible.
-
You do not have to be a certain weight to get a BBL, but you must have enough excess fat available to be eligible. Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann has performed BBL surgery on many patients, and can let you know what to expect for your body type with a free consultation.
-
No. A Brazilian butt lift injects your body’s own fat into the buttocks, transferred from another area on the body. A butt injection typically refers to the injection of a dermal filler, which often is temporary and has less dramatic results than a BBL.
-
“Fluffing” is a term used to describe when the buttocks takes on a softer feel after a BBL. The buttocks often initially feels quite firm after fat transfer surgery. Fluffing typically happens 2-6 months after surgery, when swelling subsides, the skin relaxes, and the buttocks starts to become softer to touch. This may result in a more projected appearance and rounded shape.
-
Typically patients are able resume their workout routine 6 weeks after a BBL surgery. This generally allows the transferred fat cells to properly establish themselves in their new location. Each individual case is different, however, and it is important to follow the specific instructions provided by your plastic surgeon.
