HYMEN RECONSTRUCTION (HYMENOplasty)
What is a Hymenoplasty?
A hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure which is designed to reconstruct the hymen. The hymen is a thin membrane located at the entrance of the vagina. The hymen may break or tear due to a number of different activities, including sports, tampon use, or sexual intercourse. Hymen reconstruction surgery can be performed to help restore the integrity of the hymen once broken. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we understand the importance of both personal choice and cultural sensitivity when it comes to intimate cosmetic procedures. We have a team of skilled professionals who are committed to providing both safe and confidential hymenoplasty services. Whether you seek hymen reconstruction for personal reasons, cultural considerations, or a combination of both, we are here to support you throughout your journey. Our female surgeon is board-certified and highly talented, with years of expertise performing female genital cosmetic surgery in the Greater Toronto Area. We can also typically accommodate requests for an all-female surgical team, if desired.
Why Have a Hymenoplasty?
For cultural or religious considerations
In some cultures, an intact hymen is associated with virginity and purity. Some may choose hymenoplasty to restore the appearance of an intact hymen before marriage or to conform to cultural or religious expectations.
Emotional and psychological reasons
For some individuals, the restoration of the hymen can provide a sense of emotional healing, closure or confidence. The procedure can help overcome feelings of guilt, shame or anxiety related to previous experiences or societal expectations.
Personal choice and autonomy
Hymenoplasty can be a personal choice for individuals who wish to have control over their bodies and how they present themselves sexually. It allows them to make decisions that align with their own values, beliefs and desires.
It is essential to remember that the decision to have a hymenoplasty should always be made by the patient themselves, after careful consideration of their own motivations and desires, and alongside the input of a qualified plastic surgeon.

FAQs about Hymenoplasty
-
No. Studies have shown that many women do not experience bleeding after first intercourse, despite the hymen being in tact. After surgery, it is not always possible to predict whether a patient will or will not experience bleeding with first intercourse post-procedure.
-
Any pain and discomfort after the surgery should be manageable with medication prescribed by your doctor, and pain should subside within a few days.
-
No. For multiple reasons, hymen reconstruction does not involve occluding the entire vaginal entrance. For example, menstrual blood must have a way of exiting the vaginal canal.
-
Whenever a surgical incision is made, there is a resultant scar. However, because of the natural anatomy of the area, scarring is often easily hidden and blends in with the natural surrounding tissue.
-
It can typically take up to 6 weeks before returning to sexual intercourse, but it is best to follow the advice of your surgeon.
-
All types of surgeries have risks, including hymenoplasty, but the surgery is generally regarded as a very safe procedure. Any potential risks and complications will be outlined during the pre-operative visits. The procedure will be performed by our experienced, board-certified female surgeon, in our on-site accredited surgical facility to optimize patient safety.

The patient is allowed to go home the day of surgery and will be prescribed medication to manage the pain.
Normally patients can return to work by 1 week after the procedure and often sooner.
