Hymenoplasty Surgery Before & After
What is a Hymenoplasty?
A hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure which is designed to reconstruct the hymen. The hymen is a thin membrane located at the entrance of the vagina. The hymen may break or tear due to a number of different activities, including sports, tampon use, or sexual intercourse. Hymen reconstruction surgery can be performed to help restore the integrity of the hymen once broken. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we understand the importance of both personal choice and cultural sensitivity when it comes to intimate cosmetic procedures. We have a team of skilled professionals who are committed to providing both safe and confidential hymenoplasty services. Whether you seek hymen reconstruction for personal reasons, cultural considerations, or a combination of both, we are here to support you throughout your journey. Our female surgeon is board-certified and highly talented, with years of expertise performing female genital cosmetic surgery in the Greater Toronto Area. We can also typically accommodate requests for an all-female surgical team, if desired.
Why Have a Hymenoplasty?
-
For cultural or religious considerations
- In some cultures, an intact hymen is associated with virginity and purity. Some may choose hymenoplasty to restore the appearance of an intact hymen before marriage or to conform to cultural or religious expectations.
-
Emotional and psychological reasons
- For some individuals, the restoration of the hymen can provide a sense of emotional healing, closure or confidence. The procedure can help overcome feelings of guilt, shame or anxiety related to previous experiences or societal expectations.
-
Personal choice and autonomy
- Hymenoplasty can be a personal choice for individuals who wish to have control over their bodies and how they present themselves sexually. It allows them to make decisions that align with their own values, beliefs and desires.
- It is essential to remember that the decision to have a hymenoplasty should always be made by the patient themselves, after careful consideration of their own motivations and desires, and alongside the input of a qualified plastic surgeon.

Labiaplasty Techniques
Trim Labiaplasty
A trim labiaplasty is the most common method for labiaplasty in Toronto. The procedure involves an incision that removes the outer edge of one or both sides of the labia minora so that they are reduced in size. Following the procedure, they tend to sit flush with or slightly receded from the edges of the labia majora. This procedure tends to remove the darkest part of the labia minora, which makes it a popular choice for cosmetic reasons.
Wedge Method Labiaplasty
The wedge labiaplasty removes a triangular (wedge) section from the inner areas of one or both sides of the labia minora, and then the remaining tissue is stitched back together. The outer, wrinkled edge of the labia remains, which may result in a more natural look after surgery.
Clitoral Hood Reduction
A clitoral hood reduction is often performed alongside labiaplasty to improve both comfort and aesthetics. This procedure reduces excess tissue around the clitoral hood, which can contribute to discomfort or an imbalanced appearance. By carefully trimming and reshaping this tissue, the clitoral hood reduction can enhance symmetry and improve sensation by reducing excess folds that may cause irritation. The goal is to maintain natural function while achieving a more refined contour.
Labia Majora Reduction
Labia majora reduction is a procedure designed to reduce the size or improve the shape of the outer labia (labia majora). Some women experience excess volume due to genetics, aging, or weight loss, which can cause discomfort in tight clothing or during physical activity. This procedure typically involves the removal of excess skin and/or fat through excision or liposuction, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more proportionate appearance. The goal is to create a balanced look that aligns with the patient’s aesthetic preferences while preserving natural function.

FAQs about Hymenoplasty
Does a hymenoplasty guarantee bleeding?
No. Studies have shown that many women do not experience bleeding after first intercourse, despite the hymen being in tact. After surgery, it is not always possible to predict whether a patient will or will not experience bleeding with first intercourse post-procedure.
Is hymenoplasty recovery painful?
Any pain and discomfort after the surgery should be manageable with medication prescribed by your doctor, and pain should subside within a few days.
Does the hymen cover the entire vaginal entrance after the procedure?
No. For multiple reasons, hymen reconstruction does not involve occluding the entire vaginal entrance. For example, menstrual blood must have a way of exiting the vaginal canal.
Does hymen reconstruction surgery leave scars?
Whenever a surgical incision is made, there is a resultant scar. However, because of the natural anatomy of the area, scarring is often easily hidden and blends in with the natural surrounding tissue.
When can I resume sexual activity after hymenoplasty?
It can typically take up to 6 weeks before returning to sexual intercourse, but it is best to follow the advice of your surgeon.
Is a hymenoplasty safe?
All types of surgeries have risks, including hymenoplasty, but the surgery is generally regarded as a very safe procedure. Any potential risks and complications will be outlined during the pre-operative visits. The procedure will be performed by our experienced, board-certified female surgeon, in our on-site accredited surgical facility to optimize patient safety.
How long is hymenoplasty recovery?
The patient is allowed to go home the day of surgery and will be prescribed medication to manage the pain.
Normally patients can return to work by 1 week after the procedure and often sooner.
Within the first week, you should be able to return to a fairly normal daily routine (excluding strenuous activities and intercourse).
You should refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 6 weeks after your hymenoplasty, following the advice of your surgeon.
Is it painful to have intercourse once the procedure is performed?
There may be some discomfort, swelling, or bleeding following first intercourse after the procedure.
