What is a Blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty (sometimes called an eyelid lift or eyelid rejuvenation surgery) improves the appearance of droopy eyelids or bags under the eyes by removing excess skin, muscle or fat. As you age, the muscles supporting your eyelids weaken, and the skin on your eyelids naturally expands and stretches over time. Excess fat may deposit in or around the eyelid, and under the eye as well. Eyelid surgery seeks to revert these changes to reveal a more youthful eye. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann will develop a surgical plan unique to your needs and will help you achieve your goals. Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute follows all guidelines from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to maximize patient safety, and Dr. Dreckmann will personally perform any necessary physical assessments during a consultation to evaluate your eligibility as a candidate. The following are a general set of requirements to be an eligible candidate for a blepharoplasty:
Smokers should quit smoking at least 4 weeks prior to surgery
Patients with underlying eye conditions or previous trauma may not be candidates for surgery

An Eyelid Surgery Overview
Procedure
An incision is made in the eyelid crease so that redundant skin (and sometimes muscle or fat) can be removed. The incision is made in this area to hide the scar in the resulting eyelid crease.
After the excess skin is removed, the edges of the incision are sutured closed.
The procedure takes approximately 1 hour.
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia, or

Return to work after 7 to 10 days
Sutures removed after 7 days
Makeup can be worn after about 2 weeks
Final results can show up after about 3 to 12 months

Types of Eyelid Surgery
Upper Blepharoplasty
An upper blepharoplasty focuses the upper eyelid and removing redundant skin, fat and/or muscle to better reveal the eye and eyelid crease. It is one of the most common plastic surgeries among both males and females and is generally sought after by older patients to achieve a more youthful look to their eyes.
Lower Blepharoplasty
A lower blepharoplasty focuses on the area beneath the eye, to reduce wrinkles and bags. To rejuvenate the appearance of the lower lid, an incision is made and excess fat is removed from under the eye to reduce puffiness. This is often combined with a fat transfer procedure to optimize the aesthetic result.
Double Eyelid Surgery
(Coming soon, Not Currently Offered by Valespring)
Some people are born without eyelid creases and have a monolid (single lid). Some patients prefer the aesthetic and appearance of a double eyelid over a monolid and it can also make the eyes appear larger. A double eyelid surgery tries to convert a single lid into a double eyelid. This is surgery is most common in patients of East Asian descent.

You are generally able to shower normally 2 days after surgery. After your surgery, Dr. Dreckmann will provide a comprehensive set of post-op instructions, including how to clean your eyelids after a blepharoplasty.

Bruising from a blepharoplasty can last for 1 to 3 weeks depending on the extent of the procedure. Swelling improves considerably over this time period as well but can take months to completely resolve. Most patients feel comfortable going out in public and returning to work within the first 2 weeks.

Mild to moderate itching is expected during the first 1 to 2 weeks after a blepharoplasty. Itching can be mitigated with a cool compress or moisturizing ointment suggested by your surgeon. If your eyes are feeling dry or irritated, lubricating eye drops can be used.

General or local anesthesia is used so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Pain is mild to moderate following surgery, usually peaking on the first day of surgery. Mild pain is expected to last up to a week. Your doctor will prescribe medication to manage the pain.

Generally cosmetic surgeries are not covered by OHIP unless deemed medically necessary. If your upper eyelid is hanging over your eye and restricting your vision by 50 percent or more, OHIP may cover your upper blepharoplasty procedure.

An eyelid surgery can be performed with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Local anesthesia involves injecting anesthetic medication into the surgical area so that you won’t feel anything in that area during the procedure. With local anesthetic alone, you will be awake. Local anesthesia can be combined with different methods of conscious sedation. Oral sedation is a lighter form of sedation where you feel relaxed but are likely still awake and aware. IV sedation is heavier than oral sedation and will likely cause you to fall in and out of sleep throughout the procedure. General anesthesia involves putting you to sleep completely. Your doctor will discuss which option is best for you at your initial consultation.

Any surgery will involve some form of scarring, and eyelid surgery is no different. Fortunately blepharoplasty typically involves minimal scarring and the scars are usually hidden within the eyelid’s natural crease such that they shouldn’t be visible when the eyes are open. Scarring can vary depending on the individual’s genetics, age and ethnicity among other factors. After your surgery, Dr. Dreckmann will provide you with post-op instructions which are designed to to minimize scarring.
