What is Botox®?

Botox and other neuromodulators, such as Dysport®, Daxxify™ or Xeomin®, are purified, medical-grade injections of botulinum toxin. This toxin is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In the appropriate doses, it acts as a muscle relaxer that can help to improve or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles. Some individuals also choose to use it as prevention against the development of wrinkles over time. It can also be used for a number of other therapeutic indications, such as excessive sweating. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute in Richmond Hill, we can help you achieve your aesthetic goals with Botox injections administered by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann.

Botox Cosmetic is used most commonly to treat forehead lines, frown (or glabellar) lines, or crow’s feet around the eyes. It can also be used to perform a non-surgical smile or brow lift, to give a pout boost, and to reduce lines around the mouth or nose (bunny lines). It can also treat a gummy smile, dimpled chin, and neck bands. Masseter Botox injections are commonly used to provide jaw contouring and a slimmer facial profile. We also offer therapeutic Botox for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) treatment.

Botox Cosmetic Injection FAQs

  • Botox injections typically last about 3-6 months, although this varies from patient to patient.

  • Typically for the initial consultation and first injection it takes between 20-30 minutes. Subsequent injections can be performed usually in about 15 minutes or less.

  • The neurotoxin acts in the injected areas by preventing nerves from releasing chemical signals to the muscles they target. This results in muscle weakness which often makes wrinkles relax and become less noticeable.

  • Most people experience only minor discomfort since a very tiny needle is used to inject the Botox. No anesthesia or pain killers are needed.

  • It usually takes 1-2 weeks to see the results of the injections.

  • The specific instructions you should follow after Botox injection will be discussed at the time of your procedure. However, general guidelines include remaining upright for 4 hours after injections, refraining from strenuous activity for 24 hours following injections, avoiding massage or pressure onto the injected areas. You may also be asked to stop certain medications or supplements before and/or after your injection procedure.

  • Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs all the Botox injections herself.
