What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which reduces the size of the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) to minimize their appearance so that they do not protrude much beyond the edges of the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). Aging, genetics, childbirth and sexual activity can all contribute to enlarged labia which and can lead to physical discomfort, hygiene issues or insecurity about one’s appearance. At Valespring Cosmetic Surgery Institute, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann will develop a surgical plan unique to your needs and will help you achieve your vision for your body. Dr. Dreckmann is a board-certified, highly talented, female plastic surgeon with years of expertise performing labiaplasties in the Greater Toronto Area.

Labiaplasty Techniques

Trim Labiaplasty

A trim labiaplasty is the most common labiaplasty method. The procedure involves an incision that removes the outer edge of one or both sides of the labia minora so that they are reduced in size. Following the procedure, they tend to sit flush with or slightly receded from the edges of the labia majora. This procedure tends to remove the darkest part of the labia minora, which makes it a popular choice for cosmetic reasons.

Wedge Method Labiaplasty

The wedge labiaplasty removes a triangular (wedge) section from the inner areas of one or both sides of the labia minora, and then the remaining tissue is stitched back together. The outer, wrinkled edge of the labia remains, which may result in a more natural look after surgery.

 FAQs about Labiaplasty

  • Studies have shown that modern labiaplasty techniques are unlikely to cause a loss of sensation. When combining labiaplasty with other female genital rejuvenation procedures, such as clitoral hood reduction, there is an increased risk of altered sensation. The risk of altered sensation from a labiaplasty alone is rare, but has been reported in the literature.

  • Vaginal rejuvenation is a broad term encompassing anything that changes the vaginal anatomy, internal or external. This can refer to both surgical and non-surgical techniques.

  • The size and shape of the labia minora vary from person to person, and this is completely normal. It is also normal to have some asymmetry of the labia minora.

Some other possible causes of labial hypertrophy include:

    • Hormonal events such as puberty or child birth

    • Aging

    • Genetics

    • Weight changes

    • Cycling

  • Many patients opt for general anesthetic to avoid feeling any pain during the labia surgery. Any pain and discomfort after the surgery should be manageable with medication prescribed by your doctor, and pain should subside within a few days.

  • A study published in 2021 found that the number of labiaplasties being performed worldwide has been increasing for a number years, by as much as almost 75% between 2015 and 2019 and it was the 15th most popular female plastic surgery in 2019.

  • Whenever a surgical incision is made, there is a resultant scar. However, because of the labia’s structure of wrinkles and folds, scarring is often easily hidden and blends in with the natural labia minora tissue. It can take several months to years for the scar tissue to fully heal and soften.

  • It may, but usually in a positive way. There is usually no loss of sexual sensation from a labiaplasty. It may make you feel more confident in your desired body image. Following labiaplasty, women have reported increased sexual function and confidence, improved body perception, and decreased discomfort with sex. Some women have also reported that with the excess tissue removed, their clitoris is more easily stimulated and they achieve orgasm more regularly.

  • A vast majority of patients are very happy with their labiaplasty results and think the procedure is worth it. In fact, on RealSelf, the labiaplasty procedure has a 94% “Worth It” rating at the time of writing this article.

  • It can take 4 to 6 weeks before returning to sexual intercourse, but it is best to follow the advice of your surgeon.

  • All types of surgeries have risks, including a labiaplasty, but the surgery is generally regarded as a very safe procedure. Any potential risks and complications will be outlined during the pre-operative visits. The procedure will be performed by our experienced, board-certified female plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephanie Dreckmann, in our on-site accredited surgical facility to optimize patient safety.

  • The patient is allowed to go home the day of labia surgery and will be prescribed medication to manage the pain.

Normally patients can return to work by 1 week after the procedure.

Within the first week, you should be able to return to a fairly normal daily routine (excluding strenuous activities and intercourse).

You should refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 6 weeks after your labiaplasty, following the advice of your surgeon.

  • The results from a labiaplasty are usually permanent. Even if a pregnancy and childbirth occur after a labiaplasty, it will likely have no negative effect on your labiaplasty results and a subsequent procedure very rarely has to be done.
