What is implant removal or replacement?

Implant removal refers to surgically removing previously placed breast implants and replacement refers to a procedure that removes old implants and replaces them with new ones. Depending on the patient’s goals, we focus on safely removing previously placed implants and, when desired, replacing them with new implants to maintain or improve the overall shape and appearance of the body. The goal of this procedure is not only to remove aging or problematic implants but also to support the surrounding tissue so the area heals properly while achieving a balanced and natural-looking result.

Implant removal may be recommended for several reasons, including personal preference, implant aging, complications such as capsular contracture, implant rupture, discomfort, or changes in aesthetic goals. During the procedure, the existing implant is carefully removed, and in some cases the surrounding capsule (scar tissue around the implant) may also be addressed to improve comfort and support healing.

For patients who wish to maintain or enhance their breast shape and volume, implant replacement can often be performed during the same procedure or after a short healing period. Replacement allows patients to choose a new implant size, shape, or type that better suits their current preferences and body proportions. If a patient doesn’t wish to replace their implants, sometimes a breast lift, fat transfer, or alternative treatments are requested to help enhance breast shape following implant removal.

Depending on the patient’s needs, implant removal and replacement procedures can also be combined with additional treatments to improve skin quality and tissue support.

Every implant removal and replacement procedure is customized based on the patient’s anatomy, the condition of the existing implants, and the desired outcome. With careful surgical planning and expert care, these procedures can help patients achieve a refreshed, balanced appearance while prioritizing safety, comfort, and long-term results.

Breast Implant Types

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater after placement in the breast, allowing for precise adjustment of size and shape. They are a safe and reliable option.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are made of a silicone case filled with a silicone gel which has a consistency similar to breast tissue, producing a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants are typically smooth and round with a variety styles and sizes available. These are the most common breast implant in Ontario, Canada.

Breast Implant Shapes

Silicone breast implant, textured, round shape

Round Implants

Round implants are circular in shape, but when upright, gravity will pull a portion of the implant towards the base, providing a natural look, while still providing more fullness to the upper part of the breast. This is the most popular breast implant shape for breast augmentation in Toronto.

Silicone breast implant, textured, teardrop shape

Tear Drop Implants

Teardrop implants were intended to mimic the natural shape of the breast with more fullness at the base of the breast. Given their asymmetrical shape, they had to be textured on the outside to prevent them from rotating. However, we now know that the textured exterior is associated with an increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Textured devices, including teardrop implants, were recalled from the market. For this reason, Valespring does not offer teardrop implants.

Breast Implant Sizes

How to choose breast implants by size

Breast implants in Ontario come in various volumes, diameters and projections. A patient’s recommended implant size is influenced by many factors, such as current breast anatomy and volume as well as desired breast volume. Our expert team will guide you through all the breast implant sizing decisions so you know exactly what you can expect from your breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Implant Placement

Breast implant placement. Before and after with subglandular, subfascial, subpectoral, submuscular placement.

Breast implants can be placed above or below the pectoralis major muscle. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. Implants placed above the muscle avoid an animation deformity, which is a motion deformity where you can see the pectoralis muscle contracting over the implant. With the above-muscle approach, there is no violation of the underlying muscle and often a faster recovery. Submuscular placement of the implant is often recommended in very thin patients, to provide enough tissue coverage over the implant and minimize the risk of complications. The breast implant placement is ultimately at the discretion of your surgeon to achieve the safest and most aesthetic result.

What is implant removal and replacement?

Implant removal and replacement is a surgical procedure that involves removing existing breast implants and, if desired, replacing them with new implants. Patients may choose this procedure to update implant size or type, address complications, or improve overall breast shape and comfort.

Patients may consider implant removal or replacement for several reasons, including implant aging, rupture, capsular contracture, discomfort, changes in aesthetic goals, or simply wanting a different implant size or shape.

Yes, in many cases implants can be removed and replaced during the same procedure. However, if there are certain complications such as infection or significant scar tissue, the surgeon may recommend removing the implants first and placing new ones after a healing period.

The procedure usually takes about 1–3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery and whether additional procedures, such as a breast lift or capsulectomy, are performed.

Most patients can return to light daily activities within 2–7 days. Swelling and discomfort usually improve within the first 1–2 weeks, while full healing may take several weeks.

Small, well-hidden scars are most common following this procedure. In many cases, surgeons try to use the same crease incision site from the original implant surgery to minimize additional scarring. Sometimes, however, the incision needs to be lengthened or relocated during the procedure.
