Types of Body Lift Surgeries

Upper Body Lift

An upper body lift refers to a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat in the upper trunk region. Bra rolls (rolls of skin present on the sides of the back or along the bra line) can be removed with an upper body lift, which is also sometimes referred to as a “bra line back lift”. An incision is made along the posterior bra line, excess skin is removed and the resultant scar is typically easily concealed by a bra. Another type of back lift is the “vertical back lift” which creates the incision from the arm pit down the side of the chest wall to remove excess skin. This method typically conceals the resultant scar when arms are down. An upper body lift may often be combined with an arm lift or breast lift.

Lower Body Lift

A lower body lift refers to a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the lower trunk. Whether you call it a lower body lift, belt lipectomy, 360 body lift, circumferential body lift, or a circumferential abdominoplasty, all these terms refer to similar procedures which remove excess skin and fat from the entire abdomen; front, sides and back. This is common for patients who have experienced significant weight loss. Incisions are typically made along the bikini line on the lower abdomen, around the flanks and across the lower back. Excess skin and fat is removed from the lower trunk to contour the abdomen and lift the buttocks and outer thighs simultaneously. An effort is made to place the incisions such that they can typically be concealed by underwear or a swim suit.

FAQs about Body Lift Surgery

How is a lower body lift performed?

A lower body lift is performed to remove excess, loose, sagging and overhanging skin of the entire lower trunk, usually as a result of dramatic weight loss.

It varies from patient to patient.

After being discharged after surgery, you are encouraged to walk often. This helps prevent complications, such as a blood clot. Medication will be prescribed to help control any pain.

After 2 to 3 weeks, most patients are able to return to work. Strenuous exercise should not be resumed until about 6 weeks after the procedure. Your surgeon will advise you as to what level of activity you can engage in during follow up visits. Final results become apparent after 6-12 months.

You should always follow your surgical team’s specific and individualized recovery plan, as recommendations may vary from patient to patient. This will help promote a successful recovery and help you achieve the best possible body lift results.

The duration of results from a blepharoplasty are variable and patient-dependent. Some may last permanently, others may require a revision or re-do procedure, typically after 5+ years have passed.
