What is a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which reduces the size of the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) to minimize their appearance so that they do not protrude much beyond the edges of the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). Aging, genetics, childbirth and sexual activity can all contribute to enlarged labia which and can lead to physical discomfort, hygiene issues or insecurity about one’s appearance. Labiaplasty Techniques

Trim Labiaplasty

A trim labiaplasty is the most common method for labiaplasty in Toronto. The procedure involves an incision that removes the outer edge of one or both sides of the labia minora so that they are reduced in size. Following the procedure, they tend to sit flush with or slightly receded from the edges of the labia majora. This procedure tends to remove the darkest part of the labia minora, which makes it a popular choice for cosmetic reasons.

Wedge Method Labiaplasty

The wedge labiaplasty removes a triangular (wedge) section from the inner areas of one or both sides of the labia minora, and then the remaining tissue is stitched back together. The outer, wrinkled edge of the labia remains, which may result in a more natural look after surgery.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

A clitoral hood reduction is often performed alongside labiaplasty to improve both comfort and aesthetics. This procedure reduces excess tissue around the clitoral hood, which can contribute to discomfort or an imbalanced appearance. By carefully trimming and reshaping this tissue, the clitoral hood reduction can enhance symmetry and improve sensation by reducing excess folds that may cause irritation. The goal is to maintain natural function while achieving a more refined contour.

Labia Majora Reduction

Labia majora reduction is a procedure designed to reduce the size or improve the shape of the outer labia (labia majora). Some women experience excess volume due to genetics, aging, or weight loss, which can cause discomfort in tight clothing or during physical activity. This procedure typically involves the removal of excess skin and/or fat through excision or liposuction, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more proportionate appearance. The goal is to create a balanced look that aligns with the patient’s aesthetic preferences while preserving natural function.

FAQs about Labiaplasty

Does labiaplasty reduce feeling?
Studies have shown that modern labiaplasty techniques are unlikely to cause a loss of sensation. When combining labiaplasty with other female genital rejuvenation procedures, such as clitoral hood reduction, there is an increased risk of altered sensation. The risk of altered sensation from a labiaplasty alone is rare, but has been reported in the literature.
Vaginal rejuvenation is a broad term encompassing anything that changes the vaginal anatomy, internal or external. This can refer to both surgical and non-surgical techniques.

The size and shape of the labia minora vary from person to person, and this is completely normal. It is also normal to have some asymmetry of the labia minora.

Some other possible causes of labial hypertrophy include:

  • Hormonal events such as puberty or child birth

  • Aging

  • Genetics

  • Weight changes

  • Cycling

The results from a labiaplasty are usually permanent. Even if a pregnancy and childbirth occur after a labiaplasty, it will likely have no negative effect on your labiaplasty results and a subsequent procedure very rarely has to be done.
